By contributing an expressive share in national GDP, livestock sector is playing a significant role in poverty alleviation and economic growth at national level in general and at provincial level in particular. It has a momentous potential to develop the province of Punjab into an Asian Tiger. This sector has enabled us to stand as third largest milk producing country in the world and contribution of Punjab in this regard is above the board. Almighty Allah has bestowed this province with precious livestock including world’s renowned breeds of buffalo, cattle, sheep, goat and camel and by taking the advantage of this potential we can not only fulfill the national demand of milk and meat but also become a big exporter in world.
To exploit the potential of this sector a special initiative has been taken by the Government of Punjab in the form of Punjab Livestock & Dairy Development Board. This board enjoys full financial and operational autonomy and through its efforts is expected to uplift the economy of Punjab by transforming this subsistence sector into a viable industry. The aim of the Government is to make Punjab a prosperous province by utilizing its livestock as an economy engine and establishment of Board is the first step in this direction.
I hope the management of the board will ensure to take all steps for promotion, development and sustainability of the sector. It is also expected that besides its role in poverty alleviation and economic growth, the board will provide hygienic milk, meat and other dairy products meeting international standard at an affordable price to the people of Punjab.
