Global movement “SUN” compliments Saira Iftikhar with “Scaling-up Nutrition Champion Award”
Acting CEO PLDDB, MPA Saira Iftikhar has rewarded her efforts to fight against menace of malnutrition in Pakistan, global movement Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) has awarded her with “The Scaling Up Nutrition Champion Award” in a ceremony held in Abidjan IVORY Coast last week where almost nominees from 60 countries were compating and Saira iftikhar was the only parlimentarian who received this award on raising voice on human and animal malnutrition.
Reportedly Saira Iftikhar, acting Chief Executive officer, Punjab Livestock & Dairy Development Board (PLDDB) has received the Scaling Up Nutrition Champion Awards by United Nations’ SUN Movement against her services rendered to fight against the malnutrition in human beings and animals as well. Saira Iftikhar is the only global parlimentarian who achieved the said milestone this year. She has dedicatedly contributed to overcome the menace of malnutrition in the areas including sensitization and awareness raising, networking with national and international institutions, constitution of necessary action groups in the Parliament and engagement of the Legislators. She also played a pivotal role in opening provincial “Scaling Up Nutrition” (SUN) secretariat in Punjab by providing on ground support. Saira Iftikhar has raised the issue of malnutrition in legislative assembly for the first time and constituted a group of legislators comprising of 30 members which is working on the issue of malnutrition and food insecurity. On this occasion, Saira Iftikhar said that if the animals are well fed with nutritious feed then there would be abundunt milk and meat for human consumption with required nutrition. She further said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Punjab, government has taken serious measures to fight against hidden hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition. Saira Iftikhar has also taken up the matter of malnutrition to the Prime Minster of Pakistan in 2016 for necessary action plan. The “Legislative Core Group” of Punjab for nutrition is very active in creating awareness about the menace of malnutrition and how it is affecting the economy of the state (losing 3% of GDP annually). She also convinced Telenor Pakistan to incorporate human nutrition chapter in its tele campaigns through messages and audio video dramas in association with Punjab Livestock & Dairy Development Board.
The Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement working in 60 member countries is a renewed global movement making efforts to eliminate all forms of malnutrition, based on the principle that everyone has right to have sufficient and nutricious food.
