Punjab Livestock & Dairy Development Board has organized farmer’s day at Chack GHONDAL, Sahiwal on 18th January, 2018. The purpose of the farmer training program was to create awareness among farmers regarding good livestock practices, the concept and importance of balance diet for ruminants’ nourishment, new fodder technology such as preservation green fodder in the form of silage for a long period of time. A good number of farmers were attended the training session. Professional speakers including Col (r) Dr Nadeem Akhter, Dr Muhammad Anwar, Nayyar Sial, Dr. Hussnain, and Mr. Zafar provided information in their native language for their better understanding. A fodder expert told the participants regarding benefits of Silage and how to prepare and preserve it for the long period of time. The speakers told the importance of balanced diet and clean water for better growth and productivity of animals. Col Nadeem Akhtar shared good practices which practiced on farm and also told them achievements of LES Farm of PLDDB. They also told them that they are used to give silage to their animals at farm and achieved very good results and milk average has reached from 4 liters per litter to 9 plus litter per animal. In the question answer session, young farmers are more interested in the new fodder technology like preserving silage etc. Participants also inquired about the safety ahd nutrient status of Silage, and digestibility status, professionals answered their queries and said that different fodder researches and experiments showed that silage is nutritious and healthy food for cattle and animals can easily digest it and also have great impact on the milk and meat productivity of animals. The proportion of ingredients present in the silage make them more nutritious and palatable then fresh green fodder and silage has a great advantage as a source of food in the fodder shortage time. Many of farmers are interested in Silage making, they want to get to know how they can prepare bunker silage by themselves, they requested to PLDDB team to conduct 2-3 session on silage making and provide them guideline about the silage. Col (r) Nadeem Akhter assured them that PLDDB “Punjab Ghar” is being providing silage choppers with operators to farmers at very low cost for chopping the silage and they will also guide the farmers about silage making. Farmers appreciated the training program and said that PLDDB has taken good initiatives for the betterment of farmers. They guided us regarding basic good livestock practices; promote the concept of silage, addressed our queries and assured us that silage is a healthy food for cattle’s and also affordable for farmers as well. PLDDB also distributed informative literature related to cattle rearing, practices to increase animals’ productivity, prevention from diseases along with whole year vaccination chart. The speaker also told farmers that PLDDB and Telenor Pakistan have launched a service for the betterment of the livestock and human nutrition as well.
